In a Founder’s Day message shared on Monday, September 21, President John Dramani Mahama urged Ghanaians both at home and across the diaspora to reflect on the enduring vision of the nation’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Mahama noted that the annual commemoration offers a vital moment to pause and honor Nkrumah’s founding contributions, particularly his relentless pursuit of African independence, Pan-African unity, and economic self-reliance—ideals that established Ghana as a global symbol of hope.
Reiterating Nkrumah’s famous declaration that “the black man is capable of managing his own affairs,” Mahama described it as the cornerstone of Ghana’s national pride and identity.
While Nkrumah and his contemporaries successfully led the nation to political independence, Mahama emphasized that the quest for a prosperous, resilient, and equitable society remains unfinished. He urged citizens to translate Nkrumah’s historical political fight into a modern effort for economic freedom and social justice.
Callings for selfless patriotism and national unity, Mahama encouraged all Ghanaians to actively support the “Resetting Ghana Agenda” and join hands in continuing the work of nation-building.
Founder’s Day is celebrated annually on September 21 to mark the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who was born on September 21, 1909.
