Two people have been arrested by the Police in Accra over alleged bribery linked to the placement of students into senior high schools through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) identified the suspects as 24-year-old Vicentia Appiah Antwi and 18-year-old Suzzy Owusu.
According to the Police, the two allegedly collected money from individuals on the promise of securing placement for them in their preferred senior high schools.
Alleged payments
The suspects are said to have charged between GH¢9,500 and GH¢22,000 per person, with the amount reportedly depending on the school applicants wanted to attend.
Police said the suspects, during interrogation, mentioned two other individuals as alleged accomplices: Nana Yaw Boateng, reportedly a medical doctor at Kwadaso Hospital in Kumasi, and Alex Asumani, also known as Lexus.
The two arrested suspects have since been released on police enquiry bail as investigations continue, including efforts to locate the other individuals mentioned in connection with the alleged scheme.
They were arrested at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday by a team from the Ministry of Education acting on the directives of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.
How the arrests happened
The Ministry of Education said some victims, including twin sisters, reported alleged demands for money to the sector minister and provided evidence indicating that the suspects had allegedly solicited payments in exchange for assistance with their SHS placement.
In a statement, the Ministry said the minister reviewed the information and evidence submitted before promptly notifying the security agencies.
The report subsequently led to the arrest of the two suspects at the Resolution Centre, where the placement process was being handled.
Investigations are ongoing.
