National House of Chiefs Raises Concerns Over Inadequate Allowances and Logistics

Members of the National House of Chiefs have expressed concerns about inadequate sitting allowances and poor logistical support, saying these challenges are hindering the effective execution of their constitutional duties.

The concerns were raised during a courtesy visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs to the House in Kumasi.

Speaking on behalf of the Chiefs, the President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, revealed that official vehicles meant to be replaced every four years have not been changed since 2019.

He further noted that the six newly created regions still lack accommodation facilities for their respective Houses of Chiefs. In addition, the quarterly logistics allocation of GH¢400 and the monthly allowance of GH¢3,000 are often delayed and irregularly paid.

Addressing the issue, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Hon. Dan Abdul-Latif, who acted as the Ranking Member for the Committee, advised the National House of Chiefs to submit strong proposals to Parliament’s leadership to maintain its constitutional independence rather than relying on ministries for funding.

Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, assured the House of the Committee’s readiness to support the National House of Chiefs in improving its operations and resolving chieftaincy disputes across the country.
